The next window is another by
Nathaniel Bryson installed during the 1905 restoration costing
approximately £45. It depicts "The Good Shepherd & Lamb
of God". It is inscribed with two phrases from the bible
"Behold the lamb of God.", and "I am the good
Shepherd." It also has an Inscription "In loving memory
of Eliza age 8 years and James aged 4½ years, died 11th
March 1876, Children of John and Elizabeth Herdman, Hazelbank,
Murrayfield."
Hazelbank was on the site of
Distillers PLC, Ellersley Road, Edinburgh. James and Eliza were the children
of John and Elizabeth Herdman, I thought it was interesting that
two children should die on the same date. I followed this up in
the Record Office and the death records showed they both died
within hours of each other in the early hours of the morning on
the 11th March 1876 from scarlet fever!
Note the Latin inscription
again, this time on the staff which of course means "Behold
the lamb of God". ("Behold the lamb of God." -
St.John Chapter 1 v29. "I am the good Shepherd." - St.John
Chapter 10 v11) |
